Key Information about this research study:
The following is a short summary of this study to help you decide whether to be a part of this study.

  • The purpose of this study is to test a novel way of training topographic map reading.
  • You will be asked to complete a series of training items where you are shown a simulated topographic map and a video of walking through the terrain. From the video and compass information, you try to figure out where you are on the map and which direction you are headed.
  • The practice session will last around 30 minutes. You may be invited back to participate in additional practice sessions, up to a total of 10 hours.
  • For each successfully completed practice session, you will be paid $6. There is no other direct benefit to particpation other than the possibility that you will become more skilled at topographic map reading (the primary hypothesis being tested).
  • The primary potential risk to participants in the study is frustration with the process of learning to read a topographic map if you find it difficult.
  • If you are reading this, you are eligible to participate in this study.
